Garden City, N.Y. - Facing a 4-0 deficit early, the Adelphi University baseball team won its Northeast-10 Conference opener with the bats.
The Panthers scored 14 runs, thanks in part to two big innings, to defeat the Assumption College Greyhounds on William J. Bonomo Field on Saturday, 14-6.
Thomas Colombo, Lawrence Cicileo and Brandon Morse led the Panthers with a pair of hits each, and combining for seven RBIs. Brett Malm, Tyler Becker, Tim Feliz and Jack Ryan all added a hit for the Panthers as well.
The Greyhounds (10-7, 0-1 NE10) took the lead in the second inning, earning three runs off one at bat. Assumption's first baseman Dillon Koster drove in three runs off a double to the center field wall, making the score 3-0 following a double, a walk and a hit batter against Michael Demarest.
The visitors then advanced the lead by one on a sacrifice fly in the same inning as Jared Brescia tallied the first of his three RBIs in the game.
The Panthers (9-4, 1-0 NE10) got one on the board in their half, following a miscue by the Assumption pitcher. With Tyler Becker on third base, a base hit by Feliz scored Adelphi's first run.
Later, a five-run fifth inning gave the Brown and Gold a two-run advantage to take its first lead at 6-4. Jack Ryan kicked things off with a two-run double driving in Becker and Feliz. Two batters later, an error on the pitcher following Malm's sacrifice bunt attempt put two more on the board for the Panthers, and Malm eventually crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly courtesy of Colombo to make the score 6-4 in favor of Adelphi.
In the top of the sixth, the Greyhounds came back to even the score with a two-run single by Brescia. However, Adelphi regained the lead in the seventh after doubles by Morse and Cicileo scored the left fielder and a previously walked Malm.
Adelphi later sealed the victory, scoring six runs in its final chance at bat in the eighth. The late rally began with two outs, as Feliz was hit and Brandon Warick walked to keep the inning alive. A series of four base hits and RBIs for each batter through the top of the Adelphi lineup led to the scoring, as Colombo iced the victory with a two-run triple, and eventually crossed the plate in the same play on an error by the third baseman.
The Brown and Gold are back on Bonomo Field tomorrow for a doubleheader against NE10 competitor, Merrimack College. The first game will begin at 12 p.m.
