Miami Shores, Fla. - Despite a near-rally in the middle innings, the Adelphi University baseball team fell to local foe, Molloy College in the final game of the Barry Tournament on Sunday afternoon, 12-5.
The Lions were the first on the board in the second inning off a solo homer to left field by leadoff hitter Jake Saltzman, who ultimately drove in five runs on the afternoon for the Lions (1-6). Two innings later, Molloy went on a four-run rally, beginning with a double to left center from Chris Peralta which cleared the bases to put the Lions up 4-0 with two outs.
One batter later, a base hit by Sean Hogan to center field increased Molloy's lead to five, and the Lions led 6-0 after the top of the fifth thanks to another RBI double, this one off the bat of Michael Wall.
Adelphi (3-2) added two in the fifth and sixth innings to creep closer. Despite the six-run deficit, freshman
Tim Feliz posted his first hit and RBI of the season off a single up the middle to bring in
Tyler Becker from first. Two batters later, Morse's single to right center drove in Feliz to cut the Lions lead to four.
In the sixth, the Panthers saw two cross the plate once again with a pair of hits by Colombo and Malm, who later scored off an RBI single from Becker and a bases-loaded walk.
However, Molloy responded in the seventh with another solo homer to left center and an RBI double, and the Lions finished off the game with a grand slam to left center field as Saltzman launched his second homer of the day.
Becker led the Panthers at the plate, going 3-for-4, as well as scoring two runs for the home team. Feliz recorded his first two hits in an Adelphi uniform, recording two RBIs in the process, while
Brandon Morse and
Kevin Krippel each notched RBIs as well.
Max Steele started on the hill for Adelphi in his first appearance of the 2019 season. The sophomore threw a total of 3.2 innings before suffering the loss, allowing five runs on three hits with four walks and two hit batters.
The Panthers will return to action in Florida on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup against Lynn University. The game will start at 3 p.m. in Boca Raton, Fla.
