Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Hoops Scores Key NE10 Win over New Haven, 62-53

Garden City, N.Y.- With four of five starters scoring in double digits, the Adelphi University women's basketball team scored a crucial divisional victory over the University of New Haven on Saturday afternoon in the Center for Recreation and Sports, 62-53.

Niajah Morgan led the Panthers (11-12, 8-8 NE10)  with 22 points, going 9-13 from the field while Jess Camarda added 15 points, tallying at least 10 points for the second straight game. Leonie Edringer recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Katie Murphy chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds.

Though Adelphi took the first meeting between the two teams back in November, the two teams entered the afternoon with identical Northeast-10 Conference records in a three-way tie for second place in the Southwest Division with American International College.

Throughout the entirety of the first quarter, both teams traded baskets with Adelphi ending the first 10 minutes with the lead, 16-14, thanks to two buckets from Murphy in the final 30 seconds.

New Haven's last lead in the game overall came with 1:08 left in the opening period, as Alxandria Kerr put in two of her team-high 14 points to put the Chargers (14-10, 7-9 NE10) ahead, 14-12.

In the second, the Panthers increased their lead to as much as nine by scoring 10 of the first 13 points, but after New Haven whittled the deficit to as few as three with under two minutes to go, a basket from Murphy and a deep three from Camarda sent the home team into the break up eight, 34-26.

Adelphi seemed to earn itself breathing room early and midway through the third, building a 10-point lead twice, but the Chargers responded with late life, scoring the last seven points with help from Camryn Debose to make it a one-possession game heading to the fourth.

However, New Haven never drew level in the fourth, as an 11-4 Panther run over 6:13 helped Adelphi again restore a double-figure lead, and New Haven never got closer than seven the rest of the way.

The Brown and Gold will next travel to the College of Saint Rose on Wednesday for an NE10 matchup. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Albany, N.Y.
