Men's Hoops Seeks Vengeance, Outscores New Haven 83-78

Garden City, N.Y. -  Meeting for the second time this season, the Adelphi University men's basketball team welcomed the University of New Haven to the Center for Recreation and Sports Saturday afternoon.

Earlier in the season the Panthers (16-8, 10-6 NE10) fell by 20 to the Chargers (15-7, 10-6 NE10) but earned a huge 83-78 divisional win to even the standings, in a three-way tie for second. Nick Cambio scored a season-high 23 points with 9-10 shooting from the field and was followed closely from ECAC Rookie of the Month (January) Ronnie Silva who ended the contest with 22.

The Chargers only held a four-point advantage at the half, using 50 percent shooting from the field, despite all five starters reaching double-figures for the game. The visitors lead by at most eight, but a 9-1 run from Adelphi capped with a Dwaine Williams three-pointer brought them within one. He accounted for nine of the team's 15 bench points, going 3-4 from three-point range.

New Haven's Kessly Felizor knocked down a tre of his own that pushed the visitors to an 11-point lead - their largest of the contest - at the 13:44 mark in the second half. Contributions from Cambio, Silva and Denzel Jenoure cut the host deficit to single digits until another three from Williams swung momentum in favor of the Panthers. A 13-4 run all but sealed the deal and made for an exciting final two minutes of action.

Coming within two on a three-pointer from Roy Kane, Jr. just under the minute mark, the Chargers missed the following two shots from the charity stripe as Adelphi made the misses hurt, connecting on their two ensuing attempts to take a 79-73 lead. After Felizor's fifth foul sent the Panthers to the line, Adelphi closed it out with two more free throws for the 83-78 victory.

Next week Adelphi visits the College of Saint Rose (2/13) and Pace University (2/16) as two of the final three road games of the regular season. Tip-off against the Golden Knights is set for 7:30 p.m.
