Baram Hurls Five Innings to Lead Baseball Past STAC, 5-2

Garden City, N.Y.- In a rescheduled matchup, the Adelphi University baseball team opened the 2019 season with a victory at home against non-conference opponent, Saint Thomas Aquinas College 5-2.

Senior pitcher Ed Baram dealt his first win of the season on the mound, tossing 10 strikeouts across five innings.

Brett Malm led the Panthers going 3-for-4 at the plate, while scoring two runs for Adelphi (1-0). Brandon Morse came away with two hits and two RBIs after nine innings, followed by Lucas Terwilliger, Lawrence Cicileo, and Tyler Becker posting one hit each against the Spartans (0-5).

Baram's first inning of his final campaign featured retiring the side, on three consecutive strikeouts.

Once the Panthers stepped up, Malm's double to left field got the senior in scoring position to eventually give the Brown and Gold its first run after Cicileo reached on an error two batters later.

A single by Morse then allowed Thomas Colombo to cross home plate, putting the Panthers up 2-0 going into the second inning.

The Spartans were able to get on the board in the third, after a double and a wild pitch put Anthony Maisano in scoring position for Michael Morgan to drive him in from third.

However, the home team responded in its half, putting up three runs after a series of singles by Malm, Becker, and Morse. The latter scored the Panthers final run of the contest on a wild pitch to end the third inning.

Adelphi was able to hold Saint Thomas Aquinas for four scoreless innings, until the Spartans cut into the Panthers' lead on a sacrifice fly to left field.

Holding a 5-2 advantage, Tom Ambrosino was able to clinch the save, striking out three batters in the final 1.2 innings.

The Brown and Gold will play tomorrow, in a previously scheduled contest for Saturday, against the Spartans at 3:00 p.m. on Bonomo Field.
