Springfield, Mass. - The sixth straight win in the Adelphi University women's basketball team's February hot streak might've been the biggest one yet.
The Panthers (15-12, 12-8 NE10) held off the American International College Yellow Jackets (15-13, 10-10 NE10) on the road on Tuesday night to clinch the Southwest Division's second seed in the Northeast-10 Conference tournament, and a home quarterfinal game inside the Center for Recreation and Sport on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
Adelphi led by six at halftime, hardly allowing AIC a lead in a tightly-contested first half, but ultimately needed to hold off the Yellow Jackets down the stretch.
A 10-2 run to close the first quarter, book-ended by three-pointers from
Fallyn Stephens and
Niajah Morgan, gave Adelphi a 21-14 lead after one, and another big triple from Stephens in the closing seconds of quarter two helped Adelphi keep the two-possession lead at the break.Â
However, a big third quarter by the home team, in which it scored eight of the first 10 points and 16 of the 25 in the period overall, put AIC on top by one headed to the fourth, 42-41. The two teams traded leads three times in the first 2:41 of the final frame, but from a 50-50 tie at the four-minute mark, Adelphi never trailed again.
AIC had three chances to tie the game with looks from three-point range in the final 23 seconds, but ultimately, the home team's inability to convert from long distance cost the Yellow Jackets a chance at sweeping the season series from the Panthers, and the No.2 seed themselves. The Yellow Jackets went just 2-for-25 from distance in the game, while Adelphi went 5-for-12.
Morgan and
Leonie Edringer paced Adelphi's scoring with 15 points apiece, with Edringer tallying her 10th double-double of the season and fifth straight behind 12 rebounds.
Morgan, who entered the night 19 points short of 1,000 for her career, now sits at 996 career points entering the NE10 playoffs.Â
The Brown and Gold will welcome Saint Anselm College, the third seeds out of the Northeast Division on the other side of the conference, in the quarterfinal round on Sunday. The Panthers fell in a hotly-contested regular season game vs. the Hawks on Jan. 12, 75-72.
