Old Westbury, N.Y. - Using advantages at both the charity stripe and from beyond the arc, the Adelphi University men's basketball team captured an 82-72 victory over New York Tech on Sunday afternoon, inside Recreation Hall.
Four different players reached double-figures for the Panthers (3-0), with
Ronnie Silva leading the way courtesy of his 19 points - which included a perfect performance at the free throw line.
Chris Coalmon used sixty percent shooting from the field to supplement his 17 points and nearly added a double-double with seven rebounds.
New York Tech (0-5) was able to lead by six after the opening seven minutes of action, but a three-pointer from
Dwaine Williams sparked a 22-4 run for Adelphi over the next 7:43 to lead the remainder of the game. The home team was held without a field goal until a jumper from former Adelphi guard Dejavaughn Utley with under 6:30 left to play in the field half.
It was Adelphi that maintained a double-digit advantage, extending the lead to 18 on a jumper from
Tim Delaney to close out the opening frame.
A seven-point stretch for the home team cut the deficit to single digits, but a 10-3 run capped with a shot from three-point land courtesy of
Joshua Koulamallah allowed the Panthers to remain in control. Tech trailed by as many as 18 points, but continued to show resolve as they tightened the game during the second half. In fact, the Bears pulled within 72-64 on a three-pointer from Marcus Saint-Furcy, prompting Panthers coach
Dave Duke to call timeout with 5:27 remaining.
Another effort late from the hosts fell short as they trailed by eight, but with under 15 seconds remaining, Adelphi moved to 3-0 this season, making that the second year in a row they've opened up with three consecutive wins.
