Garden City, N.Y. - Despite an advantage in both kills and blocks, the Adelphi University volleyball program suffered a 3-0 loss to Flagler College Friday evening, inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
Sara Mandreja led the Panthers (9-4) and all players with double digit kills at 13, as the Saints (10-6) leading attacker was Karlie Redfern, who accounted for 12. The latter completed the double-double, collecting 18 digs through three sets.
Brenna Valsted notched her first career double-double with 27 assists and 15 digs.Â
The teams were evenly matched throughout the first set, as both rattled off stretches of points to fight for a lead. At 14-13 in favor of the home team, Flagler put together a 9-4 run that had them with the advantage with the end of the set in sight.
Cara McKenzie threw up a stop at the net to come within two, but the Saints took the final three points to secure the opening set victory.Â
The early points of the second set matched the first frame, but a 5-2 run for the visiting team forced Adelphi to call a timeout at 11-9. It was Flagler's Rebekah Machovec that rattled off four consecutive kills to put the Saints in the driver's seat even with a late comeback from the hosts. Two of Flagler's six services aces came in the final points of the set, extending their lead to two in the match.Â
Adelphi held a three-point advantage in the third set when Valsted and
Sophia Powless teamed up for a block at the net, but a 4-1 run for the Saints put everything even at 19-all. Three more ties were experienced before the visitors had match point, but another block featuring Powless and untimely error from Machovec kept the game alive. The teams extended into extra points, but ultimately the Saints came out on top, using a service and attack error from the Panthers to clinch the sweep. Â
Flagler also completed their trip to Garden City with a 3-0 victory over Molloy College later in the evening, and will wrap up their northern tour with a contest at Queens College on Saturday.Â
The squad experiences a quick turnaround and will return to the Center for Recreation and Sports on Saturday, October 12 as they host Assumption College. The Northeast-10 Conference matchup is set for 1:00 p.m. as the home team looks to snap a two-game losing streak.Â
