New Haven, Conn. - In a game that seemed destined for the Panthers' first loss of 2019, the No. 1 Adelphi University men's soccer team scored in the final seconds of regulation in what was an eventual 1-1 tie with Southern Connecticut State University in a Northeast-10 Conference tilt Tuesday night at Jess Dow Field.
The Panthers, who entered the match with a 1-2-1 record in their last four matches on the road at SCSU, were locked in a scoreless tie for much of the contest, until the Owls broke through with the game's first goal with 3:32 remaining.
Adelphi (7-0-1, 3-0-1 NE10), which hadn't lost since last season's national quarterfinal, turned up the offensive intensity and pushed its entire 11-man front forward to try and find the equalizer.
With the clock's final minute winding down,
Tommy Speed sent a throw-in towards the net that caromed to the feet of
Taylor Kaczynski, who put a shot past the outstretched arms of SCSU freshman keeper Andrey Carvalho with 24 seconds left.
While the first overtime period was uneventful, Adelphi nearly came away with the game-winner in the second extra session.
In a play that mirrored his game-winner Saturday against Southern New Hampshire University,
Paolo Marciano bent a free kick just wide of the right post at the midway mark of the period. Kaczynski was also denied by Carvalho earlier in the second overtime, ending the match in a 1-1 tie.
Southern Connecticut (2-2-4, 1-2-2 NE10) led 6-2 in shots after a scoreless first half, but Adelphi swarmed its opposition with shots in the final 45 minutes, outshooting its opposition, 11-5. The Panthers had the first six shots of the second half, before the Owls registered their first shot of the period in the 73rd minute.
