Garden City, N.Y. - Less than 24-hours after a five-set victory over the College of Saint Rose, Adelphi University volleyball dropped their first Northeast-10 Conference contest of the season to American International College Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers (13-4, 4-1 NE10) suffered a four-set loss to the Yellow Jackets, snapping their six game win streak.
Sara Bisbe, who only had two kills in the opening set, finished the contest with a game-high 18 kills and a nearly .300 hitting percentage. Five different players had two or more block assists - including five from
Sophia Powless - to help the team hold an 11-3 advantage in total blocks for the contest.
Right out of the gate, the Yellow Jackets (9-8, 4-2 NE10) swung their way to an early 6-1 lead that included Jana Potic's 1,000th career kill however Adelphi clawed their way back and took a 13-11 lead, forcing an AIC timeout. Down the stretch the teams went back and forth, experiencing eight ties until 22-all, but two Panther attack errors handed the visitors the set.
AIC held onto the momentum, capturing a 25-18 second set decision before falling to the hosts in the third. Adelphi used a 12-1 run in the middle of the set to swing the game in their favor, eventually securing a 25-13 win to break the silence in the match.
Amalia Saleh and Bisbe combined for a block in the fourth set that pushed the Panthers ahead 6-5, but later two Adelphi errors and a service ace extended the AIC lead to three. Another run for the Yellow Jackets left the home team trailing by eight with no timeouts remaining. Bisbe had a hand in all three of Adelphi's final points, but the deficit was too great to overcome as the Brown and Gold dropped their first NE10 match of the season.
The team takes a break from league action to host Queens College on Tuesday, October 2. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Center for Recreation and Sport.
