Pitching Leads Baseball to Sunday Sweep of Stonehill

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University baseball team scored its first series sweep of the season on Sunday afternoon, as it won both games of a doubleheader against the Stonehill College Skyhawks, 4-1 and 5-1.

After Ed Baram hurled his first career nine-inning complete game with a career-best 11 strikeouts yesterday, Michael Tarpey and Michael Demarest led the way on the mound to earn the Panthers (13-11-1, 5-5 NE10) the sweep overall and bring them back to .500 in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Tarpey threw five innings of one-run ball in game one, and the bullpen group of Kieran McLaughlin, Josh Rovner, Max Steele and David Butler combined for four scoreless innings with eight strikeouts, but Butler earned the biggest out of all as he entered in a bases loaded, two-out situation in the ninth and struck out the final batter for the save. In game two, Demarest tossed seven innings of one-run ball, striking out a career-best nine in the longest outing of his career to date.

Steven Withers drove in three runs for Adelphi on the afternoon, and scored two in game one to go along with a 2-for-4 opener. Kory Cassara notched his first two-hit game in nearly a month in the nightcap, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Game 1
After Tarpey stranded a Skyhawk in scoring position in the top of the first, Adelphi had a runner cross home in the first inning for the second straight game in the series to jump out to a 1-0 lead. Two one-out singles from Tyler Becker and Brett Malm helped to plate the first run, and with Thomas Colombo at the plate, Malm swiped second base and Becker scored on the throw to give the Panthers the lead.

Though the Skyhawks tied the game on a third-inning sacrifice fly from Matthew Rocco, alert defense from the Panthers stopped Stonehill from scoring more as Rocco was thrown out at home trying to steal before Tarpey fanned Alex Hurley on three pitches to end the threat.

Adelphi reclaimed the lead with a pair in the fourth, as Lucas Terwilliger's leadoff double started an inning in which three of the first four Panthers reached base. Following a wild pitch, and a walk and a steal by Brandon Morse, Jack Ryan singled up the middle to drive in the go-ahead run, before Withers stroked an RBI single to score Morse as the lineup turned over.

The fifth and sixth innings proved to be Stonehill's best chances in the middle innings, as the visitors stranded two against Tarpey in the fifth and the bases loaded against McLaughlin in the sixth. A second RBI single from Withers' bat added insurance in the bottom of the sixth, and the Skyhawks did not see another runner reach base until the ninth.

Three walks backed Steele into a corner, though the freshman induced a groundout and a strikeout in between, before he gave way to Butler to preserve the win.

Game 2
From a 1-0 deficit after two innings of play, Adelphi scored two in the third inning and added insurance in the fourth, sixth and eighth frames to come away with the sweep.

Adelphi used extra bases to power its way into the lead in the third inning, as Lawrence Cicileo stroked a game-tying triple to right center before Withers doubled to left center to make it a 2-1 game. Freshman Brandon Warick delivered the RBI base hit to make it a 3-1 game in the fourth, while Kory Cassara singled up the middle to plate the Panthers' fourth run in the sixth.

In between, Demarest stranded a total of five Skyhawks on base, including the bases loaded in the fifth, to keep the lead, before giving way to Ambrosino in the eighth. Though he walked the tightrope, Ambrosino held the lead for the Panthers despite seeing the first two men reach base against him.

The sophomore induced a key double play off William Kelleher's bat after a strikeout with the tying runs on base to hold a then-three-run edge, while Butler finished off the ninth with a flourish and struck out two after Terwilliger scored on a wild pitch in the Panthers' half of the eighth.

The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday, April 10, when they host the University of Bridgeport in non-league action. First pitch from Bonomo Field is set for 3:30 p.m.
