Strong Offense Helps Baseball Claim Victory Over Southern Connecticut, 9-8

Garden City, N.Y. - Six different players registered multiple hits in the Adelphi University baseball team's defeat of Northeast-10 opponent, Southern Connecticut State University on Thursday afternoon, 9-8.

Adelphi rallied from a 6-1 deficit, which it faced after the top of the second, scoring eight unanswered runs in the middle innings for the win against their Southwest Division foes.

Tyler Becker led Adelphi (10-11-1, 2-5-0 NE10) at the dish, going a perfect 4-for-4, while scoring two runs for the home team. Tyler Warshefskie (.667), Lucas Terwilliger (.667), Thomas Colombo (.600), Brett Malm (.500) and Steven Withers (.400) combined to go 15-for-24 after nine innings.

Colombo notched his fifth game in a row with at least three hits, including one RBI, while Malm and Warshefskie each drove in two.

Sophomore pitcher Tom Ambrosino claimed his first win of the season, after entering the game in the second inning, with two runners on base. In just four innings of work, he struck out four Southern Connecticut batters, giving up just one of the visitors' eight runs.

Southern Connecticut (16-11, 1-4 NE10) took an early lead over Adelphi, scoring three runs right off the bat in the first inning. Two back-to-back singles from Ethan Joyce and Nick Lamberti put two runs on the board for the visitors as a later single by John Spoto gave the Owls another run, putting the home team in an early 3-0 hole.

Adelphi responded in the bottom half off with a solo run, courtesy of a base hit by Colombo which plated a hustling Withers from second base.

Southern jumped out to a 6-1 advantage in the second inning, as things started with an RBI single to center field, followed by a triple by Lamberti to drive in two more runners and give SCSU the five-run advantage. However, the Panthers were able to tie the game, 6-6 in the third before claiming their first lead in the bottom of the fourth.

An RBI single from Malm drove in Becker from second to send one run to the board. Two batters later, a sacrifice fly from Morse, followed by an RBI single from Warshefskie allowed Malm and Colombo to cross home plate to chip away at the visitor lead.

A double by Michael Cattani tacked on two more and knotted the game at 6-all, and the Panthers took their first lead in the next inning off a single credited to Malm and a sac fly from Terwilliger.

Following a sacrifice fly by the Brown and Gold to increased its lead 9-6, the Owls cut the Panthers' lead to one run in the top of the seventh, but were unable to edge the hosts.

Michael Tarpey closed out the contest for Adelphi, claiming his first save of the season behind 1.2 innings of work where he held the Owls scoreless and struck out three.

The Brown and Gold return to the diamond Saturday in a single game against Stonehill College. The first pitch will be hurled at 3 p.m.
