Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team closed out the regular with a sweep of the Molloy College Lions on Janet L. Ficke Field on Saturday afternoon, making some program history in the process.
Entering the afternoon, head coach
Bree Nasti and associate head coach
Ophir Sadeh sat at 198 career wins as a coaching duo, and with the 4-2 and 7-0 wins for the Brown and Gold on home turf, the pair hit the milestone of 200 victories at the helm.
Adelphi (28-19-1) scored 11 unanswered runs over the course of the doubleheader in a rematch of last year's East Super Regional, flipping the result as the Lions had booked their trip to the NCAA Championships last spring on Janet L. Ficke Field.
Seniors
Brenna Martini and
Nicole Camera helped erase Adelphi's 2-0 deficit in game one, with a fourth-inning home run and a three-run, go-ahead triple in the sixth inning, while sophomore
Emily Turney showed off her power bat and cranked two home runs for three RBIs in game two.Â
A five-run sixth inning helped Adelphi put game two to bed against the Lions (27-21), as back-to-back first pitch doubles from Martini and Camera made it a 3-0 game. From there, Turney homered to make it 5-0, while
Lauren Sandelier walked and
Christina Rizzi legged out an infield single to keep the inning going with no outs.
Both came around to score on what turned out to be a three-base throwing error by Tonianne Larson on
Krista King's bunt effort, as the throw sailed down the right field line and allowed Adelphi to make it a 7-0 contest. After a leadoff walk to begin the top of the seventh, Muller retired the next three with little fuss to help Nasti and Sadeh secure #200.
Freshmen
Nicole Mengel and
Ally Muller each hurled a pair of complete games on the afternoon. Mengel surrendered two runs on three hits with four strikeouts in game one, while Muller followed with a seven inning, one hit effort in game two with eight strikeouts and two walks. The rookie duo ends the regular season with a combined 21-10 record in the circle.
The Panthers clinched the top spot in the Northeast-10 Conference's Southwest Division ahead of next week's conference championships. More information about the league tournament, which will be hosted by Adelphi in Garden City, will be available in the coming days.Â
