Bridgeport, Conn. - A five-run second inning, as well as three home runs overall, gave the Adelphi University baseball team the power advantage it needed to edge out the University of Bridgeport, 10-4, on the road on Tuesday afternoon.
The non-conference contest marked Adelphi's third straight victory and second over the Purple Knights this season in regional play.
Kory Cassara, Michael Cattani and Steven Withers combined for three home runs and seven RBIs for the Brown and Gold for a victory over the Purple Knights on their diamond.
Cassara went deep in the second inning to open the scoring for the Panthers, and finished going 3-for-4, along with two RBI. Brett Malm finished going 3-for-5, tacking on three RBI along the way, while Steven Withers' fifth-inning blast gave him three RBI as well.
The Panthers' (21-14-1) five-run second inning kicked off with Cassara's two-out, two-run shot to left field. Immediately after, Cattani bombed a solo home run to the same spot, increasing the Adelphi lead to 3-0. Two batters later, Malm cleared the bases off a single to left center to put two more on the board.
Bridgeport (8-30) answered in the bottom of the frame, tallying one run off a sac fly to right field credited to Mark Hirschbeck. However, Cattani first responded in the fifth, roping a single to right field, to drive home Tyler Warshefskie. The Panther lead grew once again after Withers nailed a three-run homer to left field, making the score 9-1. Malm capped off the game at 10 for the Panthers following an RBI single to close out the inning.
The Purple Knights attempted to cut the Panther lead, lacing three RBI singles across the seventh and eighth innings, but the visitors held Bridgeport to just four runs after nine.
Freshman Nicolas Luc claimed his first win of the season, going four complete innings on the hill in relief of Max Steele, as well as striking out three batters.
The Brown and Gold will continue its road swing tomorrow against Northeast-10 foe, Pace University. The Southwest Division contest is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Pleasantville, N.Y.
