Softball Pounds Out 10 Runs to Earn Split with Le Moyne in SW Division Action

Syracuse, N.Y. - After falling in a one-run game to open its weekend series against division rival Le Moyne, the Adelphi University softball team scored 10 runs on 15 hits to earn a split of the first two games of a pivotal road series on Saturday afternoon.

Adelphi (24-18-1, 15-7-1 NE10) scored in five of the seven innings played in game two to earn a 10-2 victory in the nightcap after falling 4-3 in the first game, going into tomorrow's single game finale. Five players had at least two hits to power the Panthers to a win, led by Lauren Sandelier's 3-for-4 afternoon with three RBIs and a run scored.

The junior's RBI triple in the third inning helped Adelphi open up a 3-0 lead, while fourth and seven-inning singles helped her drive in two more.

In spots one through four in the Adelphi batting order, Krista King, Nicoletta Cuccio, Brenna Martini and Nicole Camera had a breakout second game, powering to a combined 9-for-19 with four RBIs and six runs scored. In the circle, Nicole Mengel picked up her eight victory of the season as she threw 5.1 innings of one-run softball, before giving way to Jessica Vadala.

A wild pitch and an error from the Dolphins helped Adelphi plate its first two early runs, but the Brown and Gold tallied eight RBIs from that point on. Sandelier's triple kicked off a three-run inning in the third, as Adelphi led 5-0 after three, and her first RBI single followed a Camera double to help Adelphi build a 7-0 edge after four.

In the opener, a bases-loaded walk to Kailah Konkel in the top of the first gave Adelphi a short-lived 1-0 lead, as the Dolphins scored one in the first and three in the second against Ally Muller to take a lead they would never relinquish. Though Adelphi scratched out a run in the fourth and six innings thanks to Camera's bat, the Panthers ultimately fell short against the complete-game effort of NE10 strikeout leader, Alexis Eastman.

The Dolphin starter fanned nine, despite walking seven, in seven innings and improved her record on the season to 18-3.

The final game of the three-game series is slated for a 12 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
