Softball Scores Key Tuesday Sweep for Divisional Series Win vs. Pace

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team scored a key series victory over the Pace University Setters on Tuesday afternoon, sweeping a pair of games on Janet L. Ficke Field, 3-2 and 7-0.

Adelphi (21-16-1, 13-4-1 NE10) which had been tied with both Pace (14-18, 11-9 NE10) and the Le Moyne Dolphins with an 8-2 record to top the Southwest Division of the NE10 entering Tuesday's play, dropped the first game of the season series in Pleasantville a week ago, 4-1 but secured the series victory with two contrasting wins on home turf.

The Brown and Gold rode the arm of Nicole Mengel to a one-run victory in game one, as the freshman pitched her first career seven-inning complete game, allowing two runs on seven hits and stranding eight Setters on the bases.

A two-run double for Brenna Martini keyed a three-run third inning for the Panthers in game one, and Mengel stranded the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the sixth and seventh innings to help preserve the win.

Adelphi's bats came alive in game two, as the Panthers scored seven runs on nine hits in the first four innings in support of Ally Muller, before the game was called due to darkness after the top of the fifth. The freshman allowed just two hits over her innings of work, walking two and striking out three.

In the nightcap, Nicoletta Cuccio drove in two, while Nicole Camera, Emily Turney and Christina Rizzi combined for six of nine Adelphi hits in the contest.

A pair of three-run innings in the second and fourth, accounted for the bulk of Adelphi's scoring, and Muller helped her own cause with a second-inning single that scored Lauren Sandelier for her first hit of her collegiate career, and second RBI of the season.

The Panthers are back in action on the road on Wednesday, as they continue divisional play with a doubleheader at the University of New Haven. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
