Garden City, N.Y. - With less than 30 second remaining in the first overtime period,
John Arcidiacono spun around a defender and buried a low shot to give Adelphi men's lacrosse their first overtime victory of the season over Bentley University, 10-9 Tuesday evening.
The Panthers (9-2, 8-1 NE10) found themselves trailing at halftime by two goals after a four-goal second quarter padded the Falcon's (3-8, 2-7 NE10) side of the scoreboard.
Michael Paccione and
Ian Kirby netted goals to give the home team the upper hand after one frame, but Bentley's Sam Hurley had a hand in all four goals in the second to hold a two-goal lead at the half.
Arcidiacono scored his first and second goals of the contest in the third quarter, sparking a four-goal run for the hosts to put them ahead by one with 15 minutes remaining in regulation.
Nicolas Racalbuto and
Michael Osmundsen didn't miss out on scoring in the third, as the latter ended the victory with four points courtesy of a hat trick and one assist. Transitioning from the third to fourth quarter, Matt Brooks scored two consecutive times to make it a seven-all game, before a man-up possession pushed Bentley ahead once more.
After trading goals, the visitors were still up by one until a sub-minute tally from
James Hall from the top of the arc put the teams even once more as regulation came to a close after several late attempts from the Brown and Gold.
Adelphi's defense held the Falcons to a mere 10 shots in the second half alone, as the home team put up 30 shots through the third and fourth quarters.
Brendan McDougal ended the game with nine saves compared to a career-best 22 from Bentley's Michael Haggan.
Mark Andrejack and Philip Brady combined to post a 16-23 day at the faceoff to go along with 13 ground balls.
Bentley had the first possession in overtime following a face-off win by Nick Irby, and got off three shots, the last of which by Hurley was saved by McDougal. Adelphi then got the ball back, and on its fifth shot of the possession, Arcidiacono scored the winner with 24 seconds left in the first OT period.
The men's lacrosse program is back in action on Saturday, April 21 when they travel to take on #2 Merrimack. Both programs currently sit tied for second in the conference with an 8-1 record against league opponents, with their only losses coming from top-ranked Le Moyne.
