Garden City, N.Y. - Despite with a scoreless second quarter, the sixth-ranked Adelphi University men's lacrosse team secured a Northeast-10 Conference victory over Saint Michael's College Saturday afternoon, to win its sixth straight, 11-2.
The first quarter was all Adelphi as the Panthers put up five goals in a matter of 15 minutes to set the tone for the game, as the Brown and Gold (6-1, 5-0 NE10) held the Purple Knights off the scoreboard in three of the four quarters to cruise to victory.
Nicolas Racalbuto tallied a hat-trick and
Ian Kirby scored twice to lead Adelphi, while freshmen
Angelo Caiazzo,
James Hall and
Michael Paccione scored half of the remaining six goals.
Brendan McDougal stopped 12 shots of the 28 that Saint Michael's took on the afternoon, a season-high, to earn the win, while
Mark Andrejack ensured that the Panthers dominated time of possession by winning 15-of-17 face-offs at the X.
Adelphi's monster first quarter also ensured the lead at halftime, as neither team scored from the 3:17 mark in the first until Racalbuto buried his second of the game off a
Quintin McKenna assist with 12:21 on the clock in the third.
Alec Sharlow's tally with 7:02 left in the third broke up the shutout, but Racalbuto and McKenna again combined for the answer for Adelphi, which was a man-down, just seven seconds later. Though the Purple Knights scored again for the last goal of the third, four-goal fourth in which the trio of rookies and Matt Bryne scored capped the win in style for Division II's sixth-ranked team.
The Panther defense stood tall over the course of the game in front of McDougal as well, causing five of the visiting team's 13 turnovers in the game, and picking up 29 ground balls.
Adelphi men's lacrosse is back in action at home on Saturday, April 7 when they host the College of Saint Rose. Opening face-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
