Springfield, Mass. - The Adelphi University softball team extended its winning streak to six straight games with a pair of run-ruled victories to begin a four-game series at American International College on Friday afternoon, 8-0 and 12-3.
Adelphi (13-11-1, 7-0-1 NE10) broke out the power bats in the victory, scoring nine of its 20 runs in the double-header via an extra base hit in the ballpark or a home run.
Emily Turney hit her second long ball of the season in the third inning of game one, while
Brenna Martini slugged her fourth home run of 2018 in the first inning of the nightcap.
Martini hit for the cycle in the nightcap, going a perfect 4-for-4 in game two and 5-for-7 overall on the afternoon.
The Panthers' rookie arms shined once again in the doubleheader win, as reigning NE10 Rookie of the Week
Nicole Mengel threw her second five-inning no-hitter in three starts, and also drove in two runs with her pinch-hit bat in game one, while
Ally Muller struck out four in three innings in game two for her third straight win.
The Brown and Gold scored in four of the five innings in each game, jumping out to a 2-0 lead at the close of the top of the first in both contests. The lead doubled to 4-0 at the close of two innings in both games, and Martini was responsible for three RBIs of the first four in the second game, as she followed up her first inning homer with an RBI triple in the second.
Mengel capped the run-ruled win in game one in style with her bat, as her two-run double to left center scored Turney and
Kailah Konkel, who had singled and been hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. With the lead standing at 8-0, the freshman retired the side in order in the bottom of the fifth - her fourth inning of the game in which she faced the minimum number of batters - to seal the win.
A five-run fifth for the Panthers in game two seemingly put the game out of reach, but the Yellow Jackets broke up the shutout in the bottom of the fifth with a three-spot of their own. However, AIC was unable to push a fourth run across the plate against
Jessica Vadala to extend the game and the afternoon.Â
The Panthers and Yellow Jackets will play two more on Saturday afternoon, with the doubleheader set to get underway in Springfield at 12 p.m.
