Rindge, N.H. - Due to inclement weather in Garden City, the expected Northeast-10 Conference opener for the Adelphi University baseball team was moved from William J. Bonomo Field, to Dr. Arthur & Martha Pappas Field on the campus of Franklin Pierce University on Saturday afternoon.
Playing the Ravens for a second series this season and the second as the home team despite the venue switch, the Panthers again split the games against the Ravens, as the cross-divisional doubleheader with a 5-2 win for Adelphi (8-7-1) and ended with an 8-3 decision in favor of Franklin Pierce (11-7-1)
Game 1
Both teams were silent in the first two-and-a-half innings before the Panthers finally got on the board in a big way in the bottom of the third. Lucas Terwilliger, homered over the lieft field fence, putting Adelphi up 1-0. However, the designated visiting team responded with their turn at-bat on home turf, taking the lead 2-1 in the next half-inning. Following a walked batter, John Friday's double to right center tied the game at 1-1. Shortly after, Friday scored the second run for Franklin Pierce off a single from Michael Coggeshall.
Trailing until the bottom of the seventh, the Panthers tied the game at two with Jonathan Iadevaia at the plate and two men on base, as his single through the left side allowed Michael Cattani to cross home plate for home team. With Steven Withers, Iadevaia and Terwilliger on base, and Tyler Becker next in the line-up, the sophomore slammed a triple to right center, tacking on three more runs to put the Panthers up 5-2. Becker was able to tag all three bases before getting out at home plate.
That was all the run support Ed Baram would need, as the junior claimed his first win of the season, moving him to 1-1. He hurled eight innings and didn't allow another run, walking three and striking out four. David Butler relieved him in the ninth and clinched his first save for Adelphi with a pair of strikeouts.
Game 2
Franklin Pierce came out in game two of Saturday's doubleheader with hot bats, taking a 3-0 lead in the second inning against Michael Tarpey. The visiting team tacked on two more runs in the fourth, credited to a single by Jonathan Gonzales who advanced on a fielding error that led to another run for the Ravens. Gonzales later crossed the plate off a base hit from Jack Duffy, making the lead 5-0. Gonzales tacked on another run two innings later, increasing the lead 6-0.
Evan Glew held Adelphi in check on the mound for the Ravens, as he allowed just two hits over seven innings and struck out 13, including the side in the sixth. At the top of the seventh, a homer by Stephen Octave put Franklin Pierce up 8-0 over Adelphi.
The Panthers retaliated in the final inning after Brett Malm tallied three RBIs for Adelphi on one swing after hitting a home run to left field. However, Adelphi was retired in order after that to end the afternoon in a split.
The Brown and Gold will return to the diamond on Tuesday for a single game with LIU post. The game will mark Adelphi's first baseball stream on aupanthers.tv. The first pitch is at 3:30 p.m.
