Miami Shores, Fla.- In a struggle to hit the bat to the ball, the Panthers fell to the Buccaneers of Barry University, 13-4 on Thursday evening. The home team out-hit Adelphi (6-5-1) by almost half, averaging .417 after nine innings.
Barry (12-11) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a three-run homer by Jonathan Quintana, driving in two Buccaneer batters, and never looked back as they plated at least two runs in four of their eight innings.
Adelphi (6-5-1) got on the board in the fourth inning following an RBI single to center field from
Brandon Morse, allowing
Jonathan Iadevaia to score. However, the hosts responded with another three-run inning with a series of doubles, beginning with Alexis Monge to left center.
Perez and Rapoza tacked on two more doubles to drive in three runners for Barry, increasing its lead to 6-1 in the fourth, and another home run, this one for Garrett Thompson with a man on first, tacked on two more runs for the Buccaneers in the fifth.Â
The home team's largest burst against Adelphi pitching came in the bottom of the sixth inning, where a base hit and a fielding error allowed for two more runs. Shortly after, Paul Scalata tallied two RBIs off a double to right center, and another base hit by the home team allowed Scalata crossed home plate for the fifth run of the inning.Â
Trailing 13-1, the Brown and Gold scored one and two runs in the seventh and ninth innings, but the hosts prevailed to take the victory. The final two runs came in courtesy of a two-run single from freshman
Jack Ryan with
Kevin Krippel and
Tim O'Connor on base.Â
Tyler Becker had himself a perfect game at the plate in the loss, hitting 3-for-3 and tallying a home run in the seventh for the Panthers. Morse and
Kory Cassara each tacked on a hit for the visitors on their three at-bats, while Ryan logged the first two RBIs of his collegiate career.
Nick Palmerini took his first loss of the season on the hill after going 3.2 innings for the Panthers and allowing six runs on nine hits. In relief,
Robert Sciarrotta and
Austin Cole combined to throw 2.1 scoreless innings.
The Panthers will play its final contest in the Sunshine State tomorrow against Southern Connecticut at 12 p.m. before returning home.Â
