Softball Stumped in First of Three Against Palm Beach Atlantic

West Palm Beach, Fla. - After trailing by seven runs, the Adelphi University softball team put up a fight to come within two, but ultimately dropped an 11-5 decision to Palm Beach Atlantic Friday evening.

The Sailfish jumped out to a 6-0 lead early in the contest after putting up a solo run in the bottom of the first to get things going. Adelphi threatened with runners in the second, but were quickly shuffled back to defense where they retired the hosts with a one-out double play. Things opened up for Palm Beach Atlantic when they added five runs courtesy of five hits in the bottom of the third as the Panthers were shut down in order in the top half.

One more run for PBA gave them a 7-0 lead after four innings, but the visitors plated three in the fifth and two in the sixth to pull within two. Back-to-back errors from the home team allowed Adelphi to load the bases, with Brenna Martini driving in the first of the contest. Nicole Camera drew a bases-loaded walk to add another as the inning ended with a Christina Rizzi RBI.

Jessica Vadala was able to retire the Sailfish in order in the bottom half of the fifth, picking up one of two strikeouts for her stat line. Camera picked up two more RBI in the following inning with a single up the middle that scored Nicoletta Cuccio and Krista King who both reached by way of a single.

The bottom of the sixth unraveled quickly as the Sailfish pushed four runs across on three hits and one Panther miscue, while stranding three on the basepaths as the defense worked out of a jam.

Rizzi led off Adelphi's final opportunity on offense with a double, but a strong showing from PBA's Jana Wagner in the circle sent the last three batters back to the dugout, resulting in an 11-5 victory for the home team.

Bree Nasti and the softball program turn around to play a doubleheader against the Sailfish on Saturday, February 24 to conclude their spring training trip down south. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
