Winter Park, Fla. - Continuing their southern tour, the Adelphi University softball team took on Rollins College Tuesday evening at their home field located in Martin Luther King, Jr. Park.
Game 1 - Rollins 8, Adelphi 0 (5 innings)
Adelphi was hot in the first half inning after
Nicoletta Cuccio,
Brenna Martini and
Nicole Camera loaded the bases on a double, walk and single to center, respectively, but Rollins was able to retire the next two without any damage. The teams played through two scoreless innings, until the Tars broke open the contest with a six-run bottom of the third.
Rollins did most of their damage in the third frame, plating six runs, on only one hit. Chandler Middlebrook doubled to lead off the inning enroute to the Tars scoring on two bases loaded walks, a hit by pitch, a fielder's choice, an error, and a wild pitch.
Unable to string anything together, Adelphi was retired in order in both the fourth and the fifth as Rollins capped the opener with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Krista King was the lone Panther with multiple hits, as Cuccio, Camera,
Elisabeth Berard each chipped in one apiece in the loss.
Game 2 - Rollins 10, Adelphi 2 (6 innings)
It took the Brown and Gold an inning to break through, but the Panthers managed to leave the bases loaded in the top of the second. Rollins opened the scoring with three runs in the third, as a Middlebrook double set the stage for an eventual bases loaded walk. Two more scored before the visitors were able to work out of a jam before any more damage was done.
Adelphi battled back with a run in the top of the fourth.
Lauren Sandelier drew a walked and eventually crossed home on an
Emily Turney double to left field. The Tars extended their lead with two more in the fourth but the Panthers responded with one more run in the following frame. Cuccio set the stage with a two-out double to be eventually brought around by a muffed throw by the first baseman, on a Camera hit.
The hosts had no trouble responding with three more runs on four hits in their next at-bats, retiring the side on Adelphi's next offensive opportunity. Two runs scored for Rollins in the bottom of the sixth allowing the contest to be called due to an eight-run advantage for the home team.
The softball program returns to action on Wednesday, February 21 when they take on Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach, Fla. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
