Bowling Heads West to Compete in Stormin' Ladyjack Classic

2/19/2018 10:32:00 AM

Houston, Texas - The Adelphi University bowling team faced some of its toughest competition of the season at the Stormin' Ladyjack Classic over the weekend in Houston, facing off against a total of nine ranked teams, six of which are currently ranked in the national Top 10 across all three divisions.

Lena Sorrentino paced Adelphi's effort by finishing in the Top 20 as an individual, placing 18th overall behind a 206 traditional average and three games over 200. Katelyn LaRocca and Skylar McGarrity also finished in the Top 50 in a field of 110 competitors behind averages of 198.6 and 193.8, respectively, to place 32nd and 36th in the field.

A tough first day of competition against several of the best teams in the country saw the 11th-ranked Panthers drop Baker matches to No.5 Sam Houston State, No.9 Tulane, No.1 Nebraska and No.3 Arkansas State on the first day of play, while defeating No.17 North Carolina A&T State. On day two in traditional play, however, Adelphi rebounded with wins over No.22 Maryville, No.19 Louisiana Tech and Bethune-Cookman, while falling to No.7 Stephen F. Austin and No.4 Vanderbilt.

Sorrentino and LaRocca's identical scores of 211 against Maryville helped Adelphi get a victory, while LaRocca's 228 and McGarrity's 214 helped anchor the win against Louisiana Tech. Sorrentino's team and day-high 255 put her as the only Panther to crack 200 in the win over Bethune-Cookman, while she also logged a 211 alongside McGarrity's 215 in the setback to Vanderbilt.

In Sunday's bracket play, the Panthers were edged in seven games by Sam Houston and earned a crucial win over St. Francis Brooklyn, before capping the tournament in 15th place with a seven-game setback to No.18 Duquesne.

After jetting across the country, the Panthers are back in action this weekend close to home, as they compete in the Molloy College Invitational in Plainview on Feb. 24-25.
