New Haven, Conn. - Sitting just outside the top five in the Southwest Division ahead of the final regular season contest, the Adelphi University men's basketball team suffered a 79-68 loss to Southern Connecticut State University Wednesday.
Despite consistent shooting from leading scorer
Michael Coffey, who finished with 19 points in the defeat, and another double-figure effort from
Terrel Martin-Garcia, the Panthers (10-17, 6-13 NE10) will head into their final home game sitting sixth in their respective division. The hosts held Adelphi to a sub-40 shooting percentage and out-rebounded their opponents 42-32 en route to the win. The Owls (15-10, 11-8 NE10) were led by four different players, with team leader Isaiah Mcleod dropping 25 with the help of 11-18 shooting from the field.
The Brown and Gold managed to work out to a six-point advantage in the early going, but 10 unanswered points from Southern Connecticut through the halfway mark quickly swung momentum in their favor. Adelphi was held scoreless over the last four minutes of the first half, as the hosts kept pressing to lead by 12 at the break.
Jack Laffey and Coffey both knocked in a three-pointer to open the second frame as Martin-Garcia added a dunk to bring the contest back within single digits.
Tavon Ginyard came off the bench to contribute nine points in the second half alone, but the home team continued to find ways to keep the Panthers at bay. SCSU led by at-most 17 courtesy of a Jerry Luckett, Jr. jumper at 4:13, a deficit the Brown and Gold were unable to overcome even with late contributions from Coffey and Ginyard.
The men's basketball team will be idle this weekend, returning to action for their final regular season contest against American International on their home court on Tuesday, February 20. Prior to the matchup, four seniors will be honored for their accomplishments and contributions to the program.
