Men's Basketball Tops Queens in 2018-19 Opener

Pleasantville, N.Y. - Opening up the 2018-19 on a high note, the Adelphi University men's basketball team captured an 88-59 victory over Queens College in non-conference action at the NE10/CACC/ECC Challenge hosted by Pace University.

The Panthers (1-0) saw four players reach double-figure points with Jack Laffey leading the charge with 16. The senior shot 5-6 from three-point range and combined with Nick Cambio for 11 rebounds. The Knights (0-1) were all held to single-digit scoring with the exception og Shomari Redd who contributed 10.

Adelphi was able to string together a few points to take an early lead, bolstered with contributions from Austin Beech and Devavaughn Utley. A 14-3 run in favor of the Brown and Gold sent the acting home team to an 12-point advantage, with less than five minutes remaining in the opener.

Conor McGuinness scored the final six points of the half, putting the Knights back by 14. Coming out of the break, Adelphi continued to press on offense and another three from Laffey extended their lead to 23 with just under 10 to play. Queens had trouble sinking a shot, but on the other end of the floor buckets continued to fall for the Panthers.

A stretch of 15 unanswered points kept the Knight offense quiet, and a good layup from Oswald Parker III gave Adelphi their largest lead of the contest at 36, with 4:18 left on the clock. Marcus Richardson netted the final jumper of the evening, resulting in a season opening win, which marks the fourth consecutive season of that feat.

The men's program returns to the Goldstein Fitness Center on the campus of Pace University on Sunday, November 11 when they take on Chestnut Hill College at 2:00 p.m.
