Volleyball Uses Late Battles to Take 3-0 Match from Wilmington

Garden City, N.Y. - Having to recover from deficits in two of ultimately three sets, the Adelphi University volleyball team captured a three-set non-conference sweep on Monday against Wilmington University (Del.).

Sara Bisbe posted a team-leading kill count at 15 as McKenna Clawson followed suit chipping in 12 alongside three service aces. Also in double figures was Sara Mandreja, who used a .450 hitting percentage to finish with 11 kills in the victory.

Adelphi (23-5) cruised through the first set, using 15 kills and holding the Wildcats (18-12) to a sub .100 hitting percentage. Despite being even in attack errors, the visitors took a commanding stance at the net, accounting for three blocks compared to the home team's zero. Wilmington held the upper hand in that category for the match however, ultimately holding a 7-2 advantage over the Panthers.

The second started with a 4-2 leap for the hosts, but the visiting Wildcats rattled off an 8-4 run that put them in the driver's seat. They used a 6-1 stretch later in the set to push ahead to six-point advantage, capitalizing on several miscues from the Brown and Gold. Back-to-back kills from Bisbe coupled with two services aces from the Barcelona native allowed the home team to come within three and force a visitor timeout.

With Warburton at the line, Adelphi slowly chipped away and two consecutive kills from Mandreja shifted momentum in favor of the Panthers. Cara McKenzie slammed home the final kill of the set, resulting in a 2-0 lead for Adelphi, but Wilmington was tough to give in. The third set played out much like the second, when Adelphi found themselves trailing by five midway.

A 6-1 run in favor of the Brown and Gold put them back even with the Wildcats at 19-all, but in the end three unanswered points for Adelphi handed them the non-conference win.

With the end of the regular season in sight, the Panthers prepare for a two-game weekend homestand, starting Friday, November 2 when they host Stonehill College at 7:00 p.m. in the Center for Recreation and Sport.
