Springfield, Mass. - Despite a two-goal advantage at the half, the Adelphi University men's soccer program played to a 4-4 tie through two sets of overtime at American International College Friday evening to conclude the regular season.
The Panthers (12-3-2, 10-2-1 NE10) found themselves in an early hole as the Yellow Jackets scored the opening two goals of the contest, both within the first 20 minutes of action.
Stephen Megaloudis was able to cut into the deficit in the 22nd minute as the equalizer was netted by
Paolo Marciano less than 15 seconds later.
Adelphi continued to press on offense, scoring twice more before the first half was through. Marciano recorded his second of the contest off a free kick at 34:23 and
Patrick Guier added another tally for the Panthers to take a 4-2 lead into the locker room.
The Yellow Jackets (6-8-2, 5-6-2 NE10) held a commanding advantage in the second half alone in shots (10-5) which resulted in two more goals for the home team. AIC's Connor Hicks scored his first of the season on a low cross and Alexandre Frank forced overtime with his 89th minute tally.
Both teams managed shots in the first OT period, but nothing on goal to send the teams to a final ten minutes of regular season action. Jake Durham was the lone player to land a shot on target, but it was picked up by
Matt Apicella, who finished with just three saves in the draw.
The 2018 NE10 Men's Soccer Championship will begin with Quarterfinal Round play on October 30. Based on the standings, the Panthers earn the No. 2 seed, but also a share of the Regular Season title, ahead of the tournament and will host No. 7 Southern Connecticut State on Tuesday.
