Manchester, N.H. - Adelphi University volleyball began its northern swing on a positive note, capturing a three-set victory over the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire on Friday evening.
The Panthers (17-4, 6-1 NE10) used a .412 team hitting percentage in the opening set en route to a sweep of the home team. They were led by
Sara Bisbe, who accounted for 13 kills and eight digs as
McKenna Clawson narrowly missed a double-double with nine kills and digs, respectively.
Irem Bat was the lone player for the Penmen (6-8, 4-2 NE10) in double-digits kills, finishing with 10 and a .304 hitting percentage.
Each set finished with decisions in five points of each other, the first coming at 25-21. A kills from Bisbe, courtesy of a set from
Grace Wegmann sparked a four-point run in the early going, but Southern New Hampshire quickly responded with five unanswered of their own to regain the lead. The two teams went back-and-forth, but ultimately after 18-al,l Adelphi took the final advantage and never looked back.
The second set featured more offense from the home team, who led by as many as five points. The Brown and Gold battled back from that deficit, using a kill from
Sara Mandreja to post a 5-1 run and regain momentum. The Penmen managed to tie the contest at 21-21, but a kill from Bisbe, a block and a service ace from
Katie Barry gave the Panther a 2-0 lead in the match.
The hosts had to work out of an early hole in the third and ultimately final set, but managed to do so with a 5-1 run that gave them a one-point lead. Eight straight points from the visitors pushed them out to an eight-point lead, and several miscues down the stretch coupled with kills from
Cara McKenzie and Bisbe handed the Panthers their first win on the road for the weekend.
Adelphi volleyball will post a quick turnaround as they return to the court on Saturday, October 13 to face off against Franklin Pierce at 4 p.m..
