Reading, Pa. - Going up against some of the fiercest competition in the nation, the Adelphi University bowling team completed its first tournament of the 2018 calendar year over the weekend and posted its sixth Top 10 finish of the season.
Highlighting play for Adelphi on the weekend was a Baker-play victory over defending NCAA national champions and the No.2-ranked team in the country, McKendree, on Friday by a margin of 1,154-1,040 pins. Overall, Adelphi had seven Top 10 teams on its slate at the event, and posted four victories. The Panthers also earned a 1,067-1,013 Baker victory over third-ranked Arkansas State, and a traditional-play over ninth-ranked Tulane (1,035-964) on Saturday. In Sunday's bracket play, the Panthers defeated the University of Maryland - Eastern Shore, who ranks at No. 8.
In addition, the Panthers scored wins over No.24 Monmouth and No.14 Alabama-Birmingham on Saturday.
Rebecca Gotterbarn posted five 200-plus games in traditional play to lead Adelphi to a 10th place finish, as she came in ninth place overall with a 219.8 average.
Katelyn LaRocca and rookie
Skylar McGarrity finished just over a tenth between each other with a 190.60 and 189.8 average respectively, to round out Adelphi's top three at the tournament.
As a unit, the Panthers went 6-4 over the first two days of play, going 4-1 in traditional play on Saturday to set them up for Sunday's bracket play.
Gotterbarn's streak of games kicked off with a 266 in Adelphi's 1,035-964 victory over Tulane while McGarrity chipped in a 201, and
Olivia Lopera later rolled a team-high 242 in the Panthers' tight 973-942 win over Youngstown State. In the Brown and Gold's next win over Monmouth, they got heavy lifting from sophomore tandem
McKenna Collier and Lopera, who rolled a 210 and 209, respectively, to compliment Gotterbarn's 215.
Adelphi's final win in traditional play over UAB came in part thanks to a 210 from LaRocca, who joined Gotterbarn in the 200-plus club (212).
The Panthers return to the lanes at Kutztown for the Golden Bear Classic on the weekend of Feb. 9-11.
