Philadelphia, Pa. -- A 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles for Karen Serina clinched victory for the Adelphi University women's tennis team in its season opener on Thursday afternoon, as the Panthers defeated Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) 7-2 on the road.
Serina's victory was one of two singles matches where Adelphi (1-0) dropped just a single game, as junior Samantha Perri dominated at No. 4 in similar fashion to open her season with a win. Freshman Nicole Kielan impressed in the collegiate debut, as she and Vanja Savic won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles for Adelphi's second point of the match, and later earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles.
In doubles, Perri and Elizabeth Kallenberg shined at second flight, blanking Usha Baublitz and Millie Coombes in a pro set bagel, 8-0, as Adelphi led 2-1 after doubles.
