Garden City, N.Y. - Seniors Jeanine Nunez and Taylor Sipos kicked off their final seasons with a bang on Thursday night, as each tallied a goal to lead the #15 Adelphi University women's soccer team to a season-opening victory over the Mercy College Mavericks on Motamed Field.

The two first-half goals came nearly 30 minutes apart for Adelphi (1-0), which out-shot Mercy (2-1) by a 9-5 margin (4-3 on goal) in a defensive-minded contest. Freshman goalie Isabel Sandström recorded her first clean sheet in net in her first collegiate start, making three saves in 90 minutes.

Adelphi's first shot of the game resulted in the first goal, as Sipos made a quick move and struck from the top of the box past Ashley Price for a 1-0 Panther lead in the 11th minute. The Brown and Gold's lead doubled off Nunez's boot just one second into the 40th minute, as the Staten Island, N.Y. native buried the ball off a free kick at the top left of the box.

All three of Sandström's saves came in the second half as Mercy looked to break the shutout, including one in which she denied Heidi Serna on a penalty kick opportunity in the 70th minute. 

The team will open up Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday, September 9 when they host Merrimack College at 3:00 p.m.
