Garden City, N.Y. - In a championship matchup between the Northeast-10 Conference's top two seeds, it was the second-seeded Le Moyne College Dolphins that never trailed en route to a 7-2 victory over the top-seeded Adelphi University Panthers on Motamed Field on Sunday.
Championship MVP Jack Sweeney made 12 saves in the Dolphins' (14-2) net and allowed just two first-half goals, as Adelphi managed 14 of 26 total shots on net in the contest.
Le Moyne took a lead it would never relinquish with two first-quarter goals against
Brendan McDougal, who made 11 saves to his credit, before
Michael Osmundsen tallied the home team's first goal of the game with 3:55 left in the first.
The Dolphins net a pair of goals in each of the first three quarters and tallied one more in the fourth, as the combined efforts of Sweeney and the Le Moyne defense kept Adelphi off the board following a man-up tally for
Chris Racalbuto with 10:43 remaining in the second quarter that brought the score to 3-2.
In total, eight of Adelphi's 13 turnovers were caused by defensive pressure from Le Moyne sticks, with Justin Hussey causing two to go along with two ground balls. Both Osmundsen and
Gerard Cunningham picked up three ground balls for Adelphi, whileÂ
Joseph Catalanotti caused three turnovers and added two ground balls.
Catalanotti and McDougal were named to the NE10 All-Championship team for their efforts, alongside Sweeney, Justin Kesselring, Brendan Entemann of Le Moyne, Tim Towler of Merrimack, and Bobby Beshlian of Pace.
The Panthers, ranked as the top team in the last NCAA Division II North regional poll, will await their fate in tonight's championship selection show,
slated to air at 7:30 pm on NCAA.com, to see if they are selected for an at-large bid to the national championship.
