Syracuse, N.Y. - For the eighth consecutive season, the Adelphi University women's lacrosse program will contend for a Northeast 10 Conference title after cruising to a 14-7 victory over #3 New Haven (14-4) in the semifinals Saturday afternoon.
NE10 Player of the Year
Jacqueline Jahelka topped all players with five points behind her 11th hat trick this season with two assists.
Michele Scannell, who won four draw controls and scooped up three ground balls also recorded a hat trick as teammate and Rookie of the Year
Alison Johnson added three tallies of her own.
Ryley Weber, NE10 Defensive Player of the Year and sister
Shea Weber, a Second Team All-Conference selection combined on defense to win nine draw controls and collect six ground balls on the afternoon.
The #2 Panthers (17-1) started off the rainy contest with eight consecutive goals before New Haven broke the silence, sneaking their first in under the 11-minute mark. Seven different players scored the opening tallies for the Brown and Gold, highlighted with two from Scannell as
Beth Ann Pierce and
Nicki Stanco also got in on the action. Momentum quickly shifted to the Chargers who until midway through had few opportunities in their offensive zone.
Nicole Belanger of UNH netted the visitors first of the contest, sparking a three goal spurt to cut the Panther lead to just five. Closing out the opening frame, the teams traded goals, allowing the second-seed to maintain the five-goal advantage as they broke for the half.
Scannell converted on a fast break to open up scoring in the second frame as Johnson netted her second of the game about three minutes later. There was one more goal for AU before once more New Haven rattled off three unanswered goals to come within five. With five stops from
Hailey Peterson and strong defense
Casey Zalewski and Johnson were able to score once more each to slam the door on the semifinals and advance to the championship game, with a 14-7 decision.
The #2 Panthers will take on #1 Le Moyne College on Sunday, May 7 at 1:00 p.m. on Ted Grant Field. The team will look to avenge their only regular season conference loss from April 18, when the Dolphins took a 5-4 win on their home turf.
