Syracuse, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University baseball team dropped a pair of crucial divisional games against the Le Moyne College Dolphins on Saturday, as the second place team in the Northeast-10 Conference's Southwest Division rallied frm behind in both contests to win, 10-3 and 6-5 in 11 innings.
Adelphi (24-23, 11-11 NE10) led in both games, 3-1 and 5-0, but were unable to hold on in either end of the double-header. With the pair of defeats, the Panthers must win tomorrow's contest against the Dolphins (27-15, 14-7 NE10) and have Southern Connecticut State beat Pace in both games of tomorrow's double-header to earn their way into the NE10 Championship.
Game 1
A two-run homer from
Brandon Morse in the top of the sixth inning of the opener put Adelphi on top, 3-1, but the Dolphins put up seven runs against the combination of
David Butler and
Michael Demarest out of the bullpen in the bottom of the inning. After
Ed Baram departed after five innings, having scattered seven hits but just one run over his outing, Le Moyne sent 12 men to the plate in their half of the inning, plating seven runs on six hits, one error, a walk, a hit batter and two wild pitches.
The Green and Gold added two more in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach, as Cody Barnes silenced the Adelphi bats in his three innings of relief of Alex Kubera, allowing just one hit. Morse drove in all three of the Adelphi runs in the first game, on a 2-4 day at the plate with a run scored.
Game 2
Donato DiNorcia stroked a game-tying two-run homer off
Michael Tarpey to tie the nightcap at 5-5 in the eighth inning, as the Dolphins eventually walked off with an unearned run in the bottom of the 11th inning against
TJ Santiago.Â
DiNorcia was also involed in the game-winning run for the Dolphins, as he singled to lead off the bottom of the 11th, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on Santiago's throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt. One batter later, Brian Cox stroked the game-winning sacrifice fly that saw DiNorcia trot home with the game-winning run.
The Brown and Gold started hot at the plate, and gave
Daniel Taggart a 5-0 lead after the first two innings. A two-run single for
Thomas Colombo capped the first inning, while
Brett Malm stroked an RBI single in the second to account for the bulk of the scoring. However, the Dolphins climbed back in the game with a three-run third, highlighted by a two-run single for Gabe Levanti, part of a 5-5 game for him at the plate.
The Panthers end the regular season tomorrow, May 7, with a 12 pm game against the Dolphins to close out the three-game set.
