Women's Lacrosse Heads Back to Final Four with 18-1 Win Over New Haven

Garden City, N.Y. - The top-ranked Adelphi University women's lacrosse program won in dominating fashion Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Division II Second Round, with an 18-1 convincing win over No. 4 New Haven. The Chargers (15-5) earned a spot in the second round after taking down No. 5 Mercy College Friday afternoon. The win marks the fifth consecutive season that the Panthers (19-1) will appear in the NCAA Final Four.

Jacqueline Jahelka boasted a team-high six points behind five goals and one assist as Kate Beier and Casey Zalewski also scored hat tricks in the win. Three other players chipped in two goals each, as the Brown and Gold defense totaled 10 caused turnovers. Northeast 10 Defensive Player of the Year Ryley Weber collected a game high nine draw controls, with Michele Scannell finishing with five.

Highlighted with tallies from five different players, the hosts jumped out to a 10-0 lead just ten minutes into the contest. Zalewski netted her second of the contest at the 9:26 mark before New Haven's Jessica Mazliah broke up the Panthers shutout bid with seven minutes remaining in the opening half curling around from behind the goal for the unassisted score. Beier recorded her hat trick in the first half, getting the last score before both teams broke for the locker room.

Jahelka sparked the scoring in the second frame as well, as the Brown and Gold registered five goals in the first 10 minutes. The home team put up 33 shots compared to New Haven's six, and were successful in nine of 11 clear attempts for the game. Weber and Scannell combined to collect nearly all 16 of Adelphi's draw controls in the battle not only with the Chargers but against Mother Nature as well. Beth Ann Pierce was responsible for AU's only goal under the ten minute mark as several late attempts were picked up by Hailey Peterson in goal.

The team punched their ticket to the final four and will take on NE10 rival No. 2 Le Moyne in the semifinals on Friday, May 19 at 11:00 a.m.
