New Haven, Conn. -- Trailing 5-2 after five innings, the Adelphi University baseball team was unable to come all the way back on the road on Wednesday, falling 5-4 to the Southern Connecticut State University Owls.
A three-run fifth for the home team against the combination of
Ed Baram and
David Butler in relief turned a 2-2 tie into a 5-2 lead for the Owls (17-7-1, 6-3 NE10), but the Panthers (16-13, 6-6 NE10) hit back for two in the sixth to make it a one-run ballgame. After
Eric Hassell was hit by a pitch to lead off,
Tyler Warshefskie stroked one of his two hits on the day to bring the tying run to the plate, and each runner later scored on an RBI groundout by
Steven Withers and an RBI single by
Brett Malm.
In the seventh, Adelphi had another scoring opportunity to tie or take the lead, as
Brandon Morse reached on an error to open, stole second, and moved to third on a single by
Michael Cattani, who also then stole second. With runners at the corners and no one out, however, the Panthers' line drives found gloves, as
Thomas Colombo lined out to short into a double play, and another liner off the bat of Hassell ended the threat. From there, the Adelphi bats were unable to get much going against the Owls' bullpen, as the last six batters of the game were retired.
After the Owls scored a run against Baram in the bottom of the first, a
Michael Stack RBI single plated Warshefskie, who had doubled with two down to tie the game, and a Cattani RBI single tied the game at 2-2 with two on in the fifth, scoring Malm. SCSU's big inning came in the fifth, as they took advantage of three walks, an error and a hit batter following a Griffin Gara leadoff single to plate the three runs that decided the contest.
The Panthers return to action on Friday, April 14th when they begin a three-game set with the College of Saint Rose at 3:30 pm.
