Softball Powers to Sweep of Georgian Court, 4-2 and 7-5

Garden City, N.Y. -- A career day for Fallon McCarthy and the first career home run for Lauren Sandelier helped the Adelphi University softball team sweep the visiting Georgian Court Lions, 4-2 and 7-5, in non-conference action on Janet L. Ficke Field on Monday.

McCarthy, who drove in all four runs for a career-high on a 3-3 day at the plate in game one, went 4-5 with a walk and a run scored across the two games. Sandelier's first career home run over the left field fence broke a 5-5 tie in the nightcap, as she too went 3-4 with two walks and three runs scored across the double-header. Brenna Martini drove in four in the night cap with a pair of doubles, while Jessica Vadala got the win in relief, throwing 3.2 innings to spell Kristin Fealy.

Game 1
McCarthy smoked a two-out double to left to score Sandelier, who walked to lead off, for the first run of the game, and followed that up with another two-out hit, two-run single in the fourth to again score Sandelier and Nicole Camera, to give Adelphi a 3-0 lead to back Lindsay Mapes.

Mapes shut out the Lions for five innings, before the visitors record two of their four hits and took advantage of two Panther miscues in the field to close the gap to 3-2. With the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, however, Mapes slammed the door, getting Mikaela Power to ground out to end the threat. In the bottom of the inning, McCarthy struck again as she came to the plate after Danielle Cutuli singled and chased her home with a deep single to right, making the score 4-2 in favor of the Panthers.

That was all the insurance Mapes needed in the seventh, as she retired the side after a defensive miscue to cap her afternoon with seven innings, four hits, a walk and seven strikeouts.

Game 2
In a second game that was back-and-forth from the start, the Panthers took the lead in the first on a sac fly off the bat of Martini that scored Nicoletta Cuccio, who had earlier stroked a one-out triple. From that point, each team put up a run in each of their respective half innings, seeing the Lions take a 3-2 lead against Vadala headed to the bottom of the fourth.

Adelphi took the lead back in that inning as McCarthy singled to lead off and Cuccio added a two-out single to put runners at the corners, before Martini cashed in both runners with a double to center field to give Adelphi a 5-3 lead. As was the case all game, however, the Lions hit back right away for two in the fifth, scoring on a Kelly Hardiman double and a Stephanie Torrence groundout to again knot the game at five.

Undaunted, Sandelier came to bat to lead off the sixth against Lions' reliever Taylor Baloga who was beginning her third inning of work. The sophomore launched her pitch over the left field fence for her first career home-run and the go-ahead RBI, and while the Panthers were unable to add a run despite Stephanie Staiano's triple in the next at bat, two singles for Krista King and Cuccio led to Martini driving in the game's seventh and final run in the sixth before the game was called due to darkness.

The Panthers are back in action tomorrow, March 21, when they host the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference action in a double-header at 2 pm.
