Mineola, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University women's bowling team had its best weekend of the season last time out, as the Panthers topped the standings on both days of the Molloy Lions Invitational at Sheridan Lanes in Mineola.
The Panthers posted an 8-2 record over the course of the two-day tournament, which was played in Baker format on Saturday and Sunday. Adelphi topped the standings with a pinfall of 4,460 and a 4-1 record on Saturday, finishing ahead of second-place Felician by just 76 pins. On day two, the Panthers and Golden Falcons again went 1-2 on the leaderboard, with Adelphi taking victory by a 4,509-4,271 margin.Â
Rebecca Gotterbarn and
Lena Sorrentino led the way for Adelphi, with Gotterbarn taking tournament MVP on both days with a Baker frame average of 20.3 and 19.08, respectively, while Sorrentino chipped in a 19.088 frame average on Saturday to earn the other MVP award on day one.
The Brown and Gold's two freshmen,
Olivia Lopera and
McKenna Collier, each had a successful day as well in the tournament, as Lopera posted a frame average of 17.46 in five starts on Saturday with a total Baker pinfall of 873, while Collier rolled a 19.2 frame average on Sunday with a strike rate of nearly 57 percent.
Day one of the tournament saw Adelphi defeat St. Peter's and the host Lions before falling to Felician, and responding with wins over Chestnut Hill and NJCU to close out the day. Despite the setback to Felician, who went 5-0, the Panthers still managed to edge the Golden Falcons in total pinfall, with their defeat coming by just 24 pins. The Brown and Gold posted an identical 4-1 mark on Sunday, splitting with Roberts Wesleyan and LIU Post before defeating Kutztown, Daemen and Saint Peter's to end the second day on top.
The keglers head to Nashville, Tenn. for their next tournament, the Music City Classic hosted by Vanderbilt University, over the weekend of March 17-19.
