Garden City, N.Y. - A pair of goals from Kerianne Scorce wasn't enough to overturn an early deficit, as the top-seeded Adelphi University women's soccer team saw its season come to an end at the hands of the fourth-seeded LIU Post Pioneers in second round NCAA Tournament action on Sunday, 3-2.
Adelphi (15-4) trailed beginning in the 18th minute, as Erin O'Connor scored her first of two on the afternoon off an Andrea Huntzinger cross, beating Isabel Sandstrom to her right in between the post for the early 1-0 Pioneer lead. Just 38 seconds later, Adelphi responded, as Scorce headed
Taylor Sipos' cross up and over Pioneer keeper Hillevi Eklow to tie the game at 1-1.
The Pioneers' furious offensive pace wouldn't slow, however, as the Green and Gold outshot the Panthers, 9-8, over the first 45 minutes and scored twice more in the first half, just 15 seconds apart in the 31st minute. O'Connor's second score came as she beat the defense on a long through ball from Julia Duffy, setting her up for a one-on-one against Sandstrom which she buried in the low right post to give LIU Post (17-3-1) the lead again at 2-1.
After a miscommunication on defense, Huntzinger slipped her way free behind the oncoming Panthers, and slotted the third goal of the afternoon into the bottom of the net for a 3-1 lead which stood at the half.
Scorce and Sipos combined again to make it a one-goal affair in the 68th minute, as Sipos' pass up the right side found Scorce to beat Eklow down that wing and make it a 3-2 contest. Though Adelphi out-shot the Pioneers 10-4 in the second half, Eklow's four second-half saves for a game total of eight helped to keep her team ahead for the duration.
LIU Post will travel to second-seeded Mercy next week for a shot at the NCAA East Region title and a spot in the national quarterfinals.Â
The Panthers end their season as Northeast-10 Conference regular season champions for the third straight year after their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance.Â
