#1 Men's Soccer Succumbs to Second Half Rally by #8 Bentley in NE10 Quarterfinals, 2-1

Garden City, N.Y. - Two second-half goals by the visiting Bentley University Falcons gave the visiting eighth-seeds a second straight upset over a top-seeded Adelphi soccer team, as the visiting team came aways with a 2-1 victory in the Northeast-10 Championship quarterfinals on Motamed Field on Tuesday night.

After the top-seeded Adelphi women's team fell to Merrimack by the same score this afternoon, the men's squad (13-2-2) took an early lead behind James Thristino's goal in the 28th minute.

Adelphi put the offensive pressure on early, forcing Bentley keeper David Price to make three saves in the first 23 minutes of play. After a foul in the box, Adelphi was awarded a penalty kick at the 27:57 mark, and while Federico De Oliveira's PK was saved by Price, Thristino was there to clean up the rebound and give the defending NE10 champions the 1-0 advantage.

That score stood for the duration of the first half, but the Falcons began to ramp up pressure looking for the equalizer to begin the second 45 minutes. After a Taylor Kaczynski shot, which would've made it a 2-0 game, just 1:31 into the second half hit the crossbar out of the reach of Price, Bentley took five shots in the vicinity of the goal over the next eight minutes - three of which were stopped by Raymond Leto.

Bentley (6-9-2) would not be denied the equalizer, as Julian Stewart took a Sean Sullivan cross straight across the goal line and past Leto to tie the game at 1-1 in the 70th minute, before scoring his second late in the 86th into the top left corner of the goal from Colby Gould.

Adelphi briefly thought it had found the late equalizer in the 88th minute, as Kaczynski chipped the ball up to De Oliveira who scored in an open net, but the play was ruled offsides and the score remained 2-1. Though Adelphi took two more shots and had two more corner kicks in the final 1:31, the tying effort fell short.

Adelphi, ranked fifth in the East Region in the last edition of the NCAA Division II regional rankings last week, will now await its fate at the hands of the regional committee in regards to qualifying for the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year.
