Bowling Kicks Off Season at Kutztown, Gotterbarn Earns Pair of MVP Honors

Reading, Pa. - The Adelphi University bowling team kicked off the 2017-18 season with two one-day tournaments hosted by Kutztown University over the weekend, competing at the Bud Whitman Memorial in Baker and traditional play.

Overall, the Panthers went 6-3 across the two days, as Adelphi senior Rebecca Gotterbarn earned MVP honors for both days of the tournament.

Gotterbarn, named ECC Preseason Bowler of the Year last week, averaged a 23.28 frame average in Baker play on Saturday, and topped the standings with a 226 individual average over the course of five games, as Adelphi went 4-1 as a team in Sunday's play.

Katelyn LaRocca finished 14th with a 200.2 traditional average on the second day, while freshman Skylar McGarrity posted a 19.32 frame average in her first collegiate tournament in Baker play.

Adelphi posted a 2-2 record on the first day in Baker play, defeating Saint Peter's University and Saint Francis Brooklyn, while falling to Duquense and LIU Brooklyn in between. In four tightly-contested Baker matches, Adelphi defeated Saint Peter's 917-862, and Saint Francis Brooklyn 947-908.

Taking the momentum from a finishing win over Saint Francis on Saturday, Adelphi's Sunday began with a 933-846 win over Medaille College, and kept rolling with an emphatic 1,013-809 win over Caldwell. After suffering a setback against Saint Francis (Pa.), the Panthers ended on a high, defeating Wilmington by a nearly 100-pin margin, and closing out the weekend with a 931-873 win over Youngstown State.

LaRocca posted a game score over 200 in the first four traditional matches for Adelphi on Sunday, while Gotterbarn chipped in a team-high 279 in the win over Wilmington, and a 247 in the fifth match. McGarrity added a 204 to the Panthers' cause in the win over Medaille, while Lena Sorrentino was the high roller in the Caldwell win with a 215.

The Brown and Gold's 191.7 traditional average on the second day slotted them in fifth, as the top Division II program. Delaware State claimed the win behind a 204.9 team average.

The Panthers are back in action on Oct. 21, as they travel to Wallingford, Conn. for Sacred Heart Univeristy's Bowl for the Cure one-day tournament.
