West Hempstead, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's tennis team will ride a 10-match winning streak into the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament, after the Panthers blanked Saint Anselm, 9-0, in their final regular season match on Sunday.
Prior to Sunday's match at the Hempstead Lake Indoor Tennis Center, moved indoors to begin an hour later due to rainy conditions, Adelphi (12-1, 11-1 NE10) honored its three graduating seniors:
Rebecca Fakas,
Elizabeth Kallenberg and
Vanja Savic.Â
The Panthers set the tone with two 8-0 bagel sets in doubles at No.3 and No.2, as Savic and Kallenberg partnered
Samantha Perri and
Nicole Kielan, respectively, to wins at the flight. Fakas and
Karen Serina had the toughest match of the day in the top spot, but edged the Hawks' (5-8, 4-8 NE10) Jess Perkins and Kaitlin Hughes, 9-7 for the 3-0 lead.Â
Perri and Kallenberg gave Adelphi an unassailable 5-0 lead with dominant singles wins, dropping just one game combined, as Fakas finished off the match in style, winning all six games in the second set after edging Perkins in a tight opener between two of the NE10's best players.
