Garden City, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University women's basketball team, ranked No. 14 in the most recent edition of the WBCA Division II Coaches' Poll, had to rally late past a game Saint Anselm Hawks team on Tuesday night at the Center for Recreation and Sport, with the Panthers coming out on top, 55-47.
For almost three full quarters, the Hawks maintained a strong lead, before a Sierra Schrader layup towards the end of the third gave Adelphi the lead for good en route to their 14th consecutive victory on the season.
Sierra Clark added to her recent 1,000-point milestone with 21 points and 14Â rebounds to record her 15th double-double of the season for the Panthers (18-2, 13-0 NE10), while Schrader recorded her fifth double-figure point game with 11 points and seven rebounds. Simone Hobdy just missed out on double figures with nine points, while Julia Gnieser sank a pair of key three-pointers. The Panthers met their match with the Hawks (12-7, 7-6 NE10), getting 16 points from Candace Andrews and 12 rebounds from Kaila Duarte.
In the start of the first quarter, a Schrader layup gave Adelphi an immediate lead, before an answer from Duarte tied the score for the Hawks. After six minutes of a back-and-forth action, the Hawks managed to spread the lead to five as 17-12 with 53 seconds left -- a lead they took into the second quarter. That period read the same story, where a key three by Gnieser kept Adelphi close, and Saint Anselm never managed to pull away enough for the Panthers to fall too far behind. Calli Balfour closed the half with a quick steal and her first basket of the game, bringing the Brown and Gold to a three-point spread behind the Blue and White at halftime, 28-25.
For nearly five minutes in the third, the Hawks remained in the lead, but a 7-0 run for Adelphi at the midway point, capped by a two from Balfour, gave them their first lead since the first quarter, 34-32 with 4:03 remaining. Three ties in the final minute highlighted the period, but Schrader's drive keyed a 6-0 Adelphi run to end the quarter, leading 42-38. Adelphi never relinquished the lead in the fourth, running away with the game thanks to a 12-2 run over nearly eight minutes, while the Hawks responded with a 7-0 run late to cut the gap to single-digits. Â
The Panthers return to action as they go on the road for an NE10 matchup against Assumption on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1:00 pm.
