Reading, Pa. -- Over the weekend, the Adelphi University bowling team returned to competition in the 2017 calendar year at the Kutztown Invitational, hosted by the Kutztown University Golden Bears, and placed 13th overall in a field of 26 teams.
A week removed from qualifying for Junior Team USA,
Rebecca Gotterbarn paced the Panthers individually with a fifth-place finish, earning All Tournament First Team honors thanks to her 217.8 average overall and her 19.3 frame average. Also finishing in the top 20 for the Panthers individually was
Lena Sorrentino, who rolled to a 13th place individual finish with a 206 average overall.
Olivia Lopera also performed well for the Panthers, posting a 19.1 frame average in three starts and a 180 individual average.
It was an even split for the Panthers on day one of Baker action, as they posted a 3-3 record thanks to wins over Youngstown State, Monmouth and Medaille while suffering defeats to Vanderbilt, Wisconsin-Whitewater and Central Missouri. Adelphi's best effort on the afternoon came second up, as they rebounded from an opening defeat to Vanderbilt by defeating Youngstown State by over 100 pins, 1,006 to 903.
On day two, the Brown and Gold were powered to wins over Bethune-Cookman, North Carolina State A&T, Pitt-Bradford and Chestnut Hill thanks to a well-rounded effort on the lanes. Gotterbarns's 268 was Adelphi's high mark against Bethune-Cookman, while Lopera chipped in a 243, Sorrentino scored a 222 and
Katelyn LaRocca a 201. Gotterbarn broke 200 pins in four of Adelphi's matches on day two, while Sorrentino cracked 200-plus in three of the traditional games.
The final day of the tournament saw Adelphi placed in the bracket against Youngstown State to open, before dropping into the consolation bracket to face North Carolina State A&T. Despite falling in the first two games, the Panthers rebounded on a high to defeat Central Missouri by a tight margin to edge out in 13th place.
The Panthers return to action the weekend of Jan. 27, when they return to the state of Pennsylvania for the Red Flash Invitational hosted by Saint Francis University.
