South Easton, Mass. -- For the fifth time this season, the Adelphi University men's basketball team scored over 100 points, to move to 4-1 in games when doing so, defeating the Stonehill College Skyhawks, 107-95 on the road in the Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday.
Michael Coffey and
Jack Laffey combined for 55 points to lead Adelphi (14-5, 7-4 NE10) to its third win in four games. Coffey netted a game-high 30 points on 12-of-22 shooting, including 4-for-12 from three-point range, with five rebounds and two assists, while Laffey added 25 points on 10-of-17 from the floor, including 5-for-11 from deep, with four boards and three assists.
Conor McGuinness joined the effort with a double-double with 17 points and 14 assists, connecting on 6-of-11 shots, including 3-for-7 from beyond the arc, while freshman
Austin Beech contributed 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting, four assists, three rebounds and three steals and
Manny Suarez pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for the Panthers.
Both teams shot over 60-percent from the field in the first half, as Adelphi scored the first nine points, but Stonehill used a 10-0 run to take its first lead of the night at 16-13 with 12:24 remaining in the opening half. The home team extended their lead to seven at 28-21 with a layup Michael Boen with 9:11 to play in the half, but the Panthers pulled even thanks to a 13-6 stretch at 34-34 with a layup from Coffey with 7:20 remaining.
After the Skyhawks put in the next two buckets, Adelphi followed with a 12-2 run to stretch the lead to six at 46-40 on a Beech layup with 4:19 still to go before the half. While the home team again found itself on top before the end of the period, Laffey and Coffey followed with back to back triples to give the Panthers a four-point halftime cushion at 58-54.
After a first half that saw five lead changes, Adelphi never relinquished the lead in the second half, but Stonehill pulled within a point twice in the first three minutes before the Panthers scored seven straight to keep the hosts at bay. Laffey buried another three to stretch the Adelphi lead into double figures for the first time, 77-66, with 13:22 to play, and the hosts got no closer than five until Adelphi used a 15-5 push to open a 15-point gap, 97-84, after a three-point play from McGuinness with 5:51 to go, seeing the Panthers lead by double figures the rest of the way.
The Panthers are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 21 when they host the Warriors of Merrimack College in a 3:30 pm NE10 contest.
