Assumption Snaps Volleyball's Three Match Win Streak, 3-2

Worcester, Mass. - The Adelphi University volleyball team traveled to the campus of Assumption College on Saturday, September 24 and held a two games to one lead in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Unfortunately, the host Greyhounds won two of the final three sets, snapping the Panthers' three game win streak, 3-2 (22-25, 25-13, 25-15, 23-25, 13-15).

Mandy Stanislovaitis and Melissa Rigo both topped the 20-kill plateau, as Stanislovaitis hit a team-high 23, including her 1,000th career kill, which came on her ninth effort of the day, while Rigo was just a step behind with 22 kills. Megan Manierski was credited with 57 set assists, and 16 digs, while both Rigo and Sierra Crook had 19 digs on the afternoon.

The Panthers and Hounds played even through much of the first set, with Adelphi unable to take more than a four point lead. However, with the set knotted at 20 apiece, Assumption scored four of the next six points, including a kill from Olivia Burke, giving them set point, 24-22. An attack error by the Brown and Gold on the ensuing point provided the three-point victory for Assumption. In the second set, the Panthers came out firing, jumping out to an 8-2 advantage. Assumption managed to pull back within five, 14-9, but another 8-2 run by Adelphi pushed their lead to 22-11, on a Rigo kill. The Brown and Gold finished with the 25-13 victory in the set, capped by a Madison Canestrari effort.

Play in the third set of the match continued going Adelphi's way, as the Panthers took a 10-5 lead and eventually extended it to 20-13 on an Assumption miscue. The Panthers kept hitting well, finishing the set with the 25-15 win, closed out by yet another hammer from Rigo.

The fourth set action was back and forth as the Hounds refused to go away quietly. Knotted 14-14 midway through the set, Adelphi used a, 4-1 spurt to pull in front 18-15. However, Assumption responded with a 6-1 run of their own to grab back the lead, 21-19. The teams traded points over the remainder of the set, but a Greyhound kill at 24-23 propelled the hosts to the 25-23 win, forcing a fifth set.

The Hounds and Panthers were tied 5-5 in the fifth, but Adelphi scored five straight points to pull in front 10-5. However, Assumption scored six of the next seven points to tie the conteste at 11-11. The Brown and Gold responded by scoring two of the next three points, including a Manierski kill that gave the Panthers a 13-12 lead, putting them just two points from victory. Unfortunately, three straight kills from the hosts shut the door on the Panthers, 15-13.

Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, September 27 when they host their first home match of the season at 7:00 pm in the Center for Recreation and Sports against regional power Bridgeport.

Notes
- Mandy Stanislovaitis is just the sixth player in program history to record 1,000 kills, and the first since Kaitlyn DeStefano in 2014.
- Adelphi is 8-12 all-time against Bridgeport, including a 3-1 victory over the Purple Knights in October of 2015.
- This is the Panthers' first lost to Assumption in program history, bringing their record versus the Greyhounds to 9-1.
