Garden City, N.Y. -- A pair of second-half goals from senior
Lena Pollich helped pace the Adelphi University field hockey team to its first Northeast-10 Conference victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, a 5-0 shutout of visiting Saint Michael's College.
Pollich, who tallied three assists coming in this season but had yet to score, was joined on the stat sheet by goals from
Natalina Sagliocca,
Elissa Frein and
Elizabeth Mercuri. The Panthers (4-3, 1-1 NE-10), who held a 15-2 advantage in shots and a 12-2 edge in penalty corners in the contest, forced Purple Knights' (2-5, 0-3 NE-10) keeper Abigail Bowie to make eight saves.
Two shots off penalty corner chances for the Panthers in the first five minutes of the game led to Bowie making a pair of saves, but Sagliocca broke the ice first, taking a
Charlotte Smith feed from the left side into the cage at the 5:38 mark. That 1-0 lead stood up for almost the duration of the first half, as the Brown and Gold defense kept the Purple Knights from getting off a proper shot, while the Panthers kept the pressure on offense and forced Bowie to make another five stops. Off another penalty corner chance, however, Adelphi found its second goal, as Frein scored off a
Jamie Ahrens pass from the top of the circle to double the advantage at the half.
Pollich scored for the first time just over 10 minutes into the second half as she tipped the ball in off Ahrens' second assist of the game, before Mercuri's tally off a similar feed from
Samantha Nizich made it a 4-0 game with 15 minutes to play. Pollich's second tally finished things off, as she tipped another one in front of the goal off the feed from
Justine DeLuca to close out the win.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 27 when they travel to Southern Connecticut State University for a 4 pm NE-10 contest.
NOTES
- With the addition of Pollich and Sagliocca, seven different Panthers have scored at least once this season.
- Adelphi defeated SCSU, 9-0, in non-conference action earlier this month on Motamed Field.
