Volleyball Splits Tri-Match at Le Moyne

Camillus, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University volleyball team headed upstate to take on Northeast-10 Conference foe Le Moyne and non-conference opponent Millersville hosted by the Dolphins. After dropping a 3-0 contest to the Dolphins first up, the Panthers rebounded with a 3-0 win over the Mauraders to come away with a split of their two matches on the afternoon.

Adelphi vs. Le Moyne
An early 9-3 run for the host Dolphins set the tone for Adelphi's (4-6, 0-1 NE-10) match of the afternoon, as the Panthers were unable to get closer than three points from that point. A three-point swing, thanks to a kill and ace from Melissa Rigo and a block from Megan Manierski and Madison Canestrari got the Panthers within 16-13, but the Dolphins responded with a 5-1 run of their own to take command at 21-14. A kill from Rigo momentarily stalled the Dolphins' momentum, which continued with four straight points to close out the set.

Adelphi built a 13-6 lead to begin the second set, and the Panthers remained leading at 15-9 behind a Rigo kill and a solo block from Canestrari. From there, however, a 7-1 Dolphin run knotted the action at 16-16, and the home team tied the Adelphi lead three more times after that point. A 5-2 closing run set up set point for Le Moyne, and although a Rigo kill and a Stephanie Millilo ace saved a pair, a final kill gave Le Moyne a 2-0 lead at 25-23.

Le Moyne again pushed out to an early lead in the third set, but a block from Canestrari and Katherine Ferris knotted the set at 13-13 as Adelphi battled back. From that point, Le Moyne took what appeared to be its final lead behind a 7-2 run from 17-17 that made it a 24-19 game and brought the Dolphins to match point. Adelphi's rally began at that point as three kills off the hand of Rigo, an ace from Katarina Wharburton and a Ferris kill tied it at 24-24. However, the Panthers' rally fell short as Le Moyne scored the last two points for the 3-0 sweep.

Rgio led the way for Adelphi in the opener with 19 kills, three aces and 11 digs. Manierski paced the offense with 30 assists while Sierra Crook tallied 15 total digs on defense.

Adelphi vs. Millersville
Thanks in part to 11 attack errors from the Mauraders in the opening set, the Panthers shot out of the gates quickly in their second match. After Adelphi opened the set on a 9-0 run, Millersville was largely unable to get any closer than half of the deficit for the duration of the set. After a Millersville service error made it a 15-8 game, five straight points for the Brown and Gold got them to 20-8, and back-to-back kills from Rigo and Stanislovaitis sealed the opener, 25-12.

A 6-3 lead for the Mauraders began a back-and-forth set that saw seven ties between the two teams, before a 5-0 run for the Brown and Gold with kills from Rigo and Ferris, and an ace from Manierski gave the Panthers an 18-13 lead. Out of a timeout, Millersville built momentum, and three straight points from 20-17 knotted the set at 20-20 and forced an Adelphi timeout. After talking things over, Adelphi scored five of the final six points to build a 2-0, with the run anchored by two aces from Millilo and a kill apiece from Amalia Saleh and Mandy Stanislovaitis

A 6-2 lead for Millersville to begin the third quickly swung Adelphi's way, as a 7-1 run helped in part by two aces from Crook secured a 9-7 lead. From that point, the two teams went back and forth for a total of eight ties, with the last coming at 22-22. However, that proved to be the final tie of the afternoon, as a Stanislovaitis kill, a Ferris ace and a final Millersville error gave the Panthers the 3-0 match.

Rigo and Stanislovaitis tallied double figures in kills in the win, with 12 and 10, while Manierski again totaled 30 assists with five aces and Rigo and Crook combined for a total of 35 digs. Canestrari also totaled eight blocks, while Ferris chipped in four.

The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 20 when they travel to Molloy College for a 7 pm non-conference match.

NOTES
- Adelphi has three more road matches on tap this week before their home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
- Rigo has tallied a double-double in all but two matches this season.
