Garden City, N.Y. -- A hat trick by freshman
Elissa Frein helped the Adelphi University field hockey team to a 9-0 shutout over the visiting Owls of Southern Connecticut State University on Motamed Field on Tuesday night.
The Panthers (3-2), whose nine goals set a program best for most goals in a game since the team was brought back on campus in 2008, had seven different players score in the win including Frein, as
Elizabeth Mercuri scored once and tallied an assist while
Lena Pollich also recorded two assists.Â
In a game where the Brown and Gold was in command on the stat sheet in total shots (28-5, and 20-4 on goal), the first goal of the game came at the 12:20 mark, as
Lena Pollich fed the ball in off a penalty corner and
Samantha Nizich's ball was proceeded to be tipped in by
Elizabeth Mercuri. From that point, the home team scored twice more to lead 3-0 at halftime, as Frein's first goal of the game came at the 20:41 mark after Mercuri fed her from the right side of the cage to make it 2-0, and
Emily Power scored her second goal of the season after cleaning up a rebound from a Pollich shot that was saved by Owls (2-3) keeper Brianna Craft.
Adelphi exploded for six goals by five players in the second half, beginning as
Jamie Ahrens created a goal in between Craft and the right post off a pass from Frein which made it a 4-0 contest at the 43:49 mark. From there, Frein scored again just under two minutes later on a scramble off her own blocked shot, before senior
Natalina Sagliocca scored her first career goal with 50:10 gone by to make it 6-0. Over the final 20 minutes,
Marisa McLeod, Frein and
Deirdre McIntyre all scored for the Brown and Gold, with McLeod and McIntyre coming off the bench, as the three freshmen helped to seal the victory.
The Panthers are back in action at home on Wednesday, Sept. 21, as they begin Northeast-10 Conference play with a 4 pm meeting against Stonehill College.
